Eri Okan (MEdN’s sister group) are offering samba-reggae and hand drumming percussion workshops every week at our new base one minute’s walk from Aldgate East Underground.
Drums are provided, and all levels welcome, from absolute beginners to experienced players. Any serious djembe, timba or conga players are encouraged to bring their instrument.
Cost: For those wishing to pursue this on a regular basis Eri Okan (in association with Umbela Arts) offer a £20 / month rate, which includes entry to Maracatu percussion courses every Tuesday at the same venue, and also monthly Carnival rehearsal sessions at the Rich Mix Cultural Foundation.
For those wanting to just pop in there is a charge of £6.
Extras:
Immediately following the class, the Eri Okan band will be rehearsing. Feel free to hang around and soak up the vibe. Once you’ve got the hang of it it is quite possible that you can be invited to take part and fill in when a band member does not turn up!
Banda-Afro Eri-Okan have been performing since 2003. Clubs, festivals, street parties and special events. Since 2004, the 30 piece street ensemble Bloco-Afro Eri Okan have paraded at the Notting Hill Carnival every year.
